Can anybody tell me if these 2 diodes are the TVS on this drive? And what is this little switch for?

The drive is a Toshiba 1.8" 30 Gb drive that is used in iPod. The model number is MK3008GAL or HDD1642.
The drive is completely dead.

See the attached picture.

This drive have no TVS, the marked components are capacitors.

The first clue that those are not TVS diodes is that there are two of them with the same markings. Furthermore, it would be unlikely for a drive with a single supply (3.3V) to have more than one TVS diode.

As for the component at location E1, "E" is the circuit reference used for shock sensors. Furthermore, shock sensors are usually mounted at 45 degrees to sense vibration in both horizontal axes. It's an unusual package, though, so I'm not absolutely certain.

According to the following document, pins 38 and 39 of the 40-pin interface connector are the +3.3V supply pins.

Pin 1 is arrowed on the PCB at the top end. Just below pin 40, adjacent to the top end of E1, and also angled at 45 degrees, is a small component that may be a fuse.

In case, we repair the pcb and / or can recover data from this kind of drives.

Thank you, fzabkar, for your clear explanation.

Hi fzabkar,

As you expected, it was a fuse. After replacing the fuse with a soldering dot, the drive was working and I was able to copy the whole contents.

This was also correct. With the microscope I could see that the horizontal lever was floating between the upper and lower contacts.

Thanks again!
