Hello,
First of all I want to say thanks, as I have used this forum several times to fix several issues. This time my problem has not been answered so I decided to register and seek help with it.
As the title says I am trying to recover both the Master and the User password from a Toshiba MK6015MAP. Long story short I have a Beatmania kit that I spend quite a chunk of money on back in the day. Recently the kit has started throwing out HDD error mid game, and at different points in the game each time. When I open the machine I can hear the HDD clunking around.
I have contacted Konami and they have told me that they unfortuntally no longer offer support for this machine and they can not recover or replace my HDD for me. I have also tried to jsut buy a new (well used but you get the idea) kit, but unfortunatally noone is selling one at the momement as they have become scarce due to this exact issue.
After spending quite some time speaking with a few extremely helpfull members of the MAME crew I have come to a few understnadings. The HDD is protected by both a User and a Master password. Atleast the User if not also the Master are made of non-printable characters although we believe the Master to be printable characters.
I have gone out and purchased an identical drive to this drive (for far too much money

). Using a weird combination of adapters (2.5 to 3.5 and vise versa) I have been able to boot the kit, have it unlock the drive, and then keep the drive running while I unplug it and plug it into my PC. Doing this and a few attempts (yay errors) I have been able to secure a byte-for-byte image of my drive and reimage it to the new drive. Now, I need to discover the binary that matches the passwords for the original drive so that I can put those passwords onto the new drive so the game with accept it.
We have tried just using the known passwords from old EEPROM dumps from the old old MAME data, but the passwords are of course unique per drive as they are to match the security dongles for the game. I have seen some threads on the site about doing this with Western Digital and several other manufacturers, but have yet to see anything on Toshiba.
Any help you guys could link me to would be greatly appreciated as I love this machine and really don't want to see it collect dust on me.
