Drive above powers - clicks softly 6 times - motor stutters (slows slightly for maybe 0.5 seconds) - clicks 2 times - motor stutters - clicks 2 times - motor stutters - clicks six times. and then repeat...

I have swapped PCB with a working drive but i suspect F/W incompatibilty as it will not scan on MHDD with the donor PCB board on (0 LBA). But i think this family (kermit??) is not supported by PC3K and there is no ROM that i can swap to force compatibility.

Any ideas please? Thanks in advance

what happens with the 'bad' drive pcb on the good donor drive?

I'm sure there is rom on this drive, just not the conventional 8 leg chip. Is this a Royl drive?

Client drive + donor PCB = 0 LBA does not ID

Donor Drive + Client PCB = 0 LBA does not ID

CLient Drive + CLient PCB = clicking

I think it is kermit family (where do they get their names? ) if it is royl though then will PC3K support it. Or I have Seagate Dr as well. I could try that i suppose.

EDIT - HD Dr. for seagate won't work because it is a Western DIgital drive...yes i realise that now lol

Can U read ROM in PSV (kernel) mode from patient and from donor...

Than this is not head problem, but more likely some SA problem. :S

Whit this combination the drive doesn't clicking?
Spins up and try to read the SA?

In new WD Royl it is not possible to work with SA if ATA Ovl. is not loaded!

what happens after hot swap?

I do not think Hot Swap is possible on ROYL drives because of adaptive information? Also the 'D7' in model number seems to suggest kermit family, not atlantis.

Can ROM be read in similar utility in PSV mode?

WD only can this way stabilize the eccentricity issue, if i think right. :S
Now we need another alignment practice on the top lid!
Fortunately only on the 2TB drives at the moment....

I just wanted to add that I have a WD250JB pulled from a MyBook that has very similar symptoms.
It clicks

Spins up, clicks 6 times spins down
Spins up, clicks 2 times spins down
Spins up, clicks 2 times spins down
Nothing.

Very similar, but I don't get that 4th spin up with 6 clicks like you do.
BTW, did you get any luck?

I think you will find that your drive (probably REA) is not relevant to this (1.5+ year old) discussion of ROYL drives
