SAMSUNG SPINPOINT HD103UJ- not spinning up. need a new PCB?

September 1st, 2009, 16:14

I have a 2 month old spinpoint f1 1 tb which my bios will no longer recognise and won't spin up. I believe that powering it up with two 12v feeds from my psu into the sata plug via a hybrid wire was what caused this. I also fried my dvd drive (which smoked). This was an accident and I now have the right wires for my modular PSU.

Will replacing the hdd pcb solve my problem? And if so, where can I find a replacement?

The part number is PGGUD2N5851360 and if needs be I can swap the ROM chip?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated

Hi,

these drives have embedded ROM, so u cannot simply swap it.
Swapping the pcb will not work probably.
The easiest thing is to repair the original pcb if the MPU is still alive.
(assuming that no preamp damage occured due to the overvoltage, which has 50% probability)

"easiest" : it depends. You can have good MPU with good ROM and bad read channel (seen many times) : anyway, it is possible to fix it but if MCU intervention is needed, cost is high (I speak for me). Everything depends on the importance of data on the disk.

do u wanna fix it to recover ur data or to put it back in the pc. Makes sense to repair, if it is for the data otherwise just walk to the computer store and pick up another hdd.

I forked out for a new hdd (and motherboard&cpu). My old spinpoint isn't recognised but the data is not crucial. I will investigate local repair of the pcb as i don't want to write the drive off. Can anyone recommend a company (preferably UK based) who do this, otherwise, thanks folks

Does your PCB look like this one?

If so, then check the two TVS diodes at the top LH corner for short circuits. You can remove any S/C diode -- the drive will work without it, but make sure that your PSU is good because you will no longer have any overvoltage protection.

Also check the zero ohm link (fuse?) in that same area.

Thank you for your contributions. Those who I have blown a diode of which are seen in the photograph of the previous post I tell you I worked my hdd removing one of the diodes which was clearly broken.
Thanks again because I believe that without such a photo in which you explain that these diodes act as protection of the pcb not have obtained ...
