Western Digital Cavier 500 GB External Hard Drive HELP ME

September 22nd, 2010, 0:19

Hello.

I have an external hard drive. I was using to transfer some files for backing up to it. I had it decide to not respond half way through the transfer. I terminated the process.

After that the hard drive would show up in windows, but was unaccessable.

I tried CHKDSK and it did not work.

I tried EASUS Partiton Recovery and it displayed all the files on the drive. I double clicked one of them and it opened a picture from my drive. All of a sudden it said not responding for a long time. I powered down the external and now it does not show up in my computer anymore.

It does not display and files anymore with my recovery software, I have tried many. It tried to re-install the windows driver when I hooked it up again (weird) and said it was not installed successfully.

Now my 500 gb drive shows up only as a physical drive in the rcovery software. It also now sys it is a 2 TB drive not 500 GB.

Is this recoverable? How? I hope for this data so badly... PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

it will be wise to image the drive first if possible, then use r-studio etc..

won't work. 9 out of 10 it's head problem and/or fw as it is seen 2tb. Only hope it's weak head intermittent failure. When works, get out as much and as fast as possible.

How does Microsoft's UVCView utility identify the the USB enclosure, with and without a drive installed?
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_ID ... ew.x86.exe

Can either of the following tools see the drive in the enclosure?

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):
http://www.hdsentinel.com/

HDDScan for Windows:
http://hddscan.com/

Does the drive appear in BIOS if you connect it directly to your motherboard's SATA port?

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):

HDDScan for Windows:

they can both see the drive but no info or anything can be performed...

every sector reads error. It is a prety new drive. I dont understand.

I cannot bypass the enclosure because it is SATA and I am ATA internal. Is there an adapter avail?

I told you so :

won't work. 9 out of 10 it's head problem and/or fw as it is seen 2tb. Only hope it's weak head intermittent failure. When works, get out as much and as fast as possible.

ALL THE REST IS TOTAL BULLSHIT.

Do you really want to diagnose it yourself at your own risk (BEWARE : tinkering with a failing drive with unknown failure reason CAN POTENTIALLY DESTROY OTHERWISE RECOVERABLE DATA) ? If so ...

@ kungfuthug,
Did you try to put your ears on the drive and hear it spin ?
Normal calibration, bzzzz, clicking ..... etc ?

Re: Western Digital Cavier 500 GB External Hard Drive HELP ME

September 23rd, 2010, 22:30

It spins yes, no clicking sound like it normally would. It just spins. The driver is not installing correctly when I plug it in either.

At this point I dont care if I lose the files tinkering with it, because I will never pay hundreds to have it recovered professionally. So any freshh ideas would be appreciated...

thx

All the problems happened while transfering files from Liux Ubuntu. It is normally used for windows. Could this be a factor?
