Im using DDRescue to clone a drive, maxtor 80GB big. The HDD is clicking and its most likely has some mechanical failure Id say. Even so, I managed so far to pull out 40 GB of data and only 4.5 gb of data has been "errrored". So far so good...

But...

While watching tv I was gonna checkup on cloning process to see how it has been going, and my computer froze after few seconds after I reactivated the linux OS (logged bk into it, i dunno whats it called in english but you know when the monitor turns black but pc is still on... i think u got it, cant remember the name for it, windows does the same). So I had to reboot and resumed to rescue (thanks to the ddrescue logfile feature).

Now the speed had went up from 2000-3000 kB/s to 23 000 - 28 000 kB/s. Does it have to do with HEAT or just damaged sectors that it just by coinsidence happened to bypass?

Also when doing datarecovery whats a good thumb rule to use when it comes to cooling the drive. What kind of intervalls should be used?
People put it in the freezer here and there, and everyone says it works even though I find it totally crazy even with protection against condensation. (forcing all the air out before freezing).

Should i let it cool every 10th minute or what?
