Hey. I have a myBook WD external Drive and sadly, the power-connector has the same size as one of my other plugs under my desk. So i connected it instead of 12V with 17V... After that, there was no communication with the HDD possible anymore.

We opened in my university the external drive and tried to connect it directly with a computer, but it doesn`t mount anymore. (The sound is all right, no smell or anything in this direction, nothing to see)

So we got to the idea, just to buy a new WD-HDD with the same controller and to replace it. (To swap it?) But i found a post in this forum, saying, that that is not as easy, as it looks. Because somehow i (i.e. someone else) might have to put a new firmware on it... (wanted-western-digital-1tb-wd10eads-00l5b1-pcb-t15265.html)

The thing is, that the damage of the other story looks far more destructive then my controller (the green plastic thing with the electronic on top of it - is this the pcb?).

So can you help me, please try not to use to technical english, as i am a german...

If your drive spins up and sounds OK, it does not sound like PCB problem.

What else could it be? Is there a way to check, if the PCB is working correctly / not damaged?

You need to conenct it direct to sata. Check if Bios recognises it ok. Size, name- no wierd chartacters.
If it does it is possible that there is damage or corruption cuased to the MBR or partition information.
You need to maybe downlaod a software and see if it can scan the hard drive. If you used NTFS try to find soft that support it. FAT32? EXT3? You need to know this.
I suggest maybe use HDDSCAN FOR windlows and try to do a normal scan on the hard drive if it scans and sectors are ok. then you really need to use recovery software.

Other wise the voltage could have caused some damage to PCB or something else.

Try that and let us know.

Upload a detailed photo of the component side of the PCB. That said, it doesn't sound like a PCB fault.

What model of mybook is it? If it's a newer one then it isn't as simple...

Okay, i will make an image of both sides of the PCB and will post it tomorrow. About the version of the mybook. Here starts the funny part. I have no clue. I bought the Disc on a journey from Germany to Africa in turkey. I don*t have the packaging anymore and can*t find any printed name on the external harddrive itself. It is Silver, 1TB. One Button. FW800, E-SATA and USB.

Why are you recommending a new PCB right after you say it is SA problems? Of course he would not be able to do anything with a new PCB anyway as adaptives would be different. You are giving very bad advice in thread after thread. Maybe you should settle down and just read for awhile.
