Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me in identifying which chip I need to swap in order to get this old hard drive working.

I have been told for this board the rom program have been joined with the main chip, and only swapping the PCB is not enough.

I do not have you need to use a special equipment to read and rewrite the rom program as I am an individual.

Could I just swap the main chip from you original PCB to the donor PCB?
Can someone please point out which chips will have to be swapped. I am pretty smooth at soldering but need help in identifying the correct chip.

search for TVS on this board and maybe, just maybe you will not have to do too much work

The chip with the big M on it has TV10 and TV9 on the under side of the board. Is that it?

Can anyone direct us to a video or slide show of this kind of job being done. I could only see one that was relevant on youtube.

Thanks

Post two clear pictures of the top & bottom of the board and we will tell you. If it's TVS related it's a simple fix.

I don't think that's going to be sufficient for this one

I concur, that MCU is a BGA chip, your soldering iron will be of little use.
Unless you have experience with BGA, it would be best to find DR person/company to re-program the new pcb for you. Alternatively you could try and locate an electronics shop with BGA capabilities to perform the transfer for you. However before going through all kinds of troubles and repair attempts, what seams to be the problem and why are you certain that it's an issue with the PCB?

The vacant location at U12 would normally be populated with an 8-pin serial EEPROM. However, in your case the ROM has been incorporated into the Marvell MCU immediately to the left of it.
