Drive won't spin up. Pulled it and put it in an external HDD rig, still no spin-up.

Hot plugged in my DVD/burner and got a spark. System powered down instantly. I removed the PCB and there are a couple of "warm" spots (discoloration on the foam shield) but nothing like some of the other photos here of this PCB with craters in the ICs.

Is there a common Resistor (R120?) or cap that is designed to blow & might need replacing? (wishful thinking)

Yes I've done the searches, from what I've read the likely fix will be to pick up a repl PCB and swap U12. ??

Can you upload a detailed photo of the component side of the PCB? There may be a shorted TVS diode, in which case there is potentially a much easier DIY fix.

To add the troubleshooting. When I had it initially installed in my PC it was using the old style 4 pin power connection. The external HDD rig uses the thinner SATA pover supply. Nothing happens when I put it in either one. When I look closely at the Pegasus SATA 800Mhz IC there are 2 small deformations on the surface.. It may have taken the brunt. Thanks for taking a look.

Component L2 definately got hot at some point.. as you can see by the attached.
I'm handy with a voltmeter if you've got a testpoint(s) for me to check.

You need a new board and some luck.

I suspect that the flash memory chip at U12 may have survived. I say this because it is a 3.3V device, and, AIUI, the 3.3V supply is provided by transistor Q8 rather than by means of a DC-DC converter controlled by the SMOOTH motor controller.

However, inductor L2, Scottky diode D2, and the 6-pin MOSFET appear to form a DC-DC converter that may be associated with the negative supply rail for the preamp. You can verify this by testing for continuity between each end of D4 and ground, and between the anode (non-striped end) of D4 and each pad in the 20-pin preamp connector at J1.

Its very rare to see what has happened with you. It seems as its something todo with the voltage regulator and just pushed to much juice to ALL the components..
Like dellguy said. You will need luck- that your heads are not toasted too.

New board and like fzabkar explained - change the u12 but be careful- toasting that chip and you make this more complicated than it is already.

Looks like from the Burn marks the MCU is toasted. This is very Rare. This could mean the ROM is gone to, but that rarely happens.

I suggest you take it to a data recovery place and have them work on it. Like others said before you may toast the ROM and it makes it a lot tougher to get the hard drive to work without the information in the ROM IC.

I'm impressed by the international community here and the range of advice & offers.
This is one of the rare cases when I had just installed a 1.5TB drive in this PC and moved literally ALL my files off it a week ago. All I'm out is an OS (Vista at that) and some bookmarks. So it was a best case scenario. Booted it up with Linux puppy 5.11 and the other drive is fine.
(Prompted me do do some backing up of other machines too)
Learned a lesson in hot installing (don't do it) and a little about HDD recovery.
I've got much respect for what you guys do!!
