First I would like to say hello to everyone and to thank you for taking the time to at least offer some form of help, it is greatly appreciated. On to the problem.
I recently acquired an old ASUS P4B533 computer (in mint condition) with the P4 i845e processor. 40Gb HDD (PATA,I dont think original) but anyway I have another WD1600 HDD going bad (not connected) so I purchased a new WD5000AAKS HDD (500Gb SATA) with a serial ATA connector card. I installed the hard drive, it was recognized by XP and the driver was installed for it off the ATA software. I went into disk manager, created partitions and formatted, no problem. I powered down, disconnected the old hard drive and then was going to install the OS when nothing, it isn't there on bootup. The BIOS is set on default settings. I was trying to set this up as a non raid drive, it is going to be a stand alone drive with its own OS. There is a screen which appears just before windows loads that indicates VIA VT6421 Sata Raid CDRom V. 4.95, the drive is listed here, with the correct ID information and "<Press Tab> to enter setup". When I go here all options are greyed out except the field for the serial number, but can't do anything.
Things I have tried: ASUS website: It appears as though the latest bios update (2003) does support drives over 137GB. WD website: I tried a jumper setting to limit the transfer rate from 300 to 150. It is still jumpered. Re-installing the driver. Moving files to and from the drive to insure it was working. Reinstalling cables, setting as master, slave. setting the old harddrive as a slave and leaving the new one as a master. Trying to boot as a SCSI device first.
I've reached a dead end......
I am attaching a fairly detailed system summary if anyone is interested, thanks.
