I plug it in, it sounds like it spins up, seems like it tries going thru two cycles.


I am pretty sure that this may be mechanical inside but thought I would get some advice from people that know before going any further. This used to be in a Western Digital External enclosure, I would ocassionally have issues where the drive would just disappear from windows. I removed drive from enclosure used it inside pc for a while then started having similar issues there. I would like to see if data is recoverable, never had any type of read write errors it just disappeared from view.


I have a donor drive which is the following:

I don't think I can swap the controller boards they have differing PWB #'s. But not even sure if it would be that simple.

If i need professional repair please recommend someone in my neck of the woods that wouldn't charge two legs, an arm, and a spleen.

If you can search there is a lot of problems on WD drives. Esprically the Marvel series HDD. On this one you have head issues. So if there is a mechanical problem which there is on this one heads are not reaching readness to read your drive then no you can not do anything on this one by yourself. The PCB is not your problem. Even if you swap it adaptive info has to be swapped to in order to read the drive again. You either need to solider or have the right tools to do this one. That is if your ROM chip is on the board and the adaptive information is not embedded in the very large chip call M on it which means marvel. Once you open this drive head alignment becomes an issues on it. Would advise against opening it up. Rest is up to you what you would like to do. But PCB swap will not help you in this case
