Hi,
You see the icon as the USB connection was detected, but that doesn't mean your drive is being detected as well.
Go to Manage under My Computer (right click) and check if the drive is there. If so, you might have a logical issue, and maybe can be solved with some app. If not, try to replace the USB box first of all, and after, if your data is important, go to DR company for a diagnosis.

So I think the drive may have some problem.
What you can do is power up the drive and listen very carefully to the sound of it and let us know what do you ear.

Take the drive out of the usb enclosure and put it in a known good one or connect the drive directly to the sata connection on your motherboard.
Hopefully it's just your old enclosure that's bad.

I stepped upon a small prog here --- the Low level formatting tool. Tried it first on one unit but nothing happened. What I did was reformat my comp, install winXP and the prog. I didnt restart the comp but inserted that 1TB WD USB.....

was recognized !!!
So far its still formatting. Hope everthing will come in the end fine.
WISHING EVERYONE A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR...
