I'm really lost bcuz my one an only samsung HDD has been broken (a small part [Qe R752] on its PCB has been burnt) due to a power supply failure, few days ago. well all of my data including my class projects, rare music/movies, family photos, all have been lost
So if anyone in here (including Mr. Helper/ fzabkar

) can help me out it's worthier than a million dollar present for me...
then all i want is to know that what is the name/model no. of the part/chip that have to be replaced and is that safe to recover my data from the HDD after replacing it?...ur help would be much appreciated friends...
PCB No. BF41-00163A R00 SM_8M REV. 01
HDD model No. Samsung Spinpoint HD161HJ (160GB/7200rpm/8M) REV. A

please help me out...bcuz all of my friends/family have their many files in that HDD

"QE" is the marking code for a 5V TVS diode. You can replace it with an SMAJ5.0A.
Alternatively, you can just snip it out with flush cutters. If there is no other damage, then the drive will work OK without it, but it will no longer have overvoltage protection on the affected supply rail. Be absolutely sure your PSU is OK.
If you have a multimeter, set it on the 200 ohms range and measure the resistance between ground and each of the +12V and +5V inputs, before and after removing the diode.
Good luck.

fzabkar, ur a god my friend...u knw 1 day u can achieve anything without any doubt or pain...bcuz helping is the worthiest habit in this world...no 1 can live without it

so keep up the great work..
I'll let ya'll knw if that replacing thing helps...
btw it smells burnt from the power connector on the HDD too...so if u think that i must replace something other than that diode? (i never connected the HDD after that burning thing happened)

The diode doesn't always succeed in restricting the damage. However, the fact that it shorted does account for the burning smell from the power connector. Check both the connector and the cable for damage to the +5V or ground pins. There are three pins to carry the current, so if one of them is burnt, then the other two should still do the job, at least until you recover your data.

firstly i wanna thank you for replying our questions...bcuz there are no other way to solve these issues
anyway i have another question...i asked many retail sellers in our area (electronic item sellers) for that model No. u gave me (SMAJ5.0A) but they dn't knw anything bwt finding such a diode by that code
so is there any other way to find that?
P.S. : i have a working maxtor 80gb ide HDD pcb so do it have some diode that i can replace with that?
* and....is it safer to use an external power supply such as the one came with sata to usb converter (it's a power pack) than using a regular PC power supply for connecting the HDD without over-voltage protection?
December 14th, 2010, 22:16
I think your PC's PSU would be safer. I have seen many cases of HDDs that have been overvolted by USB-SATA adapters purchased on eBay.
Without seeing your other drive, I wouldn't be able to confirm whether it has the correct part. However, you can solder a leaded 5V TVS diode directly across the power pins at the SATA connector. A P6KE6.8A looks like a suitable candidate.
P6KE Series Data Sheet - Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes:
http://www.littelfuse.com/data/en/Data_ ... e_P6KE.pdfHere are the pinouts of the SATA connector:
http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtmlConnect the striped end of the diode to +5V, and the other end to Ground.

can u please help me again

still i can't find the diode for replacing, so can u search a suitable one from this site or similar source and let me know which is suitable?
bcuz then i can buy it from web
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-st ... des/1.html(smaj5.0A can buy from retail stores as 200 or 500 lots, but u knw i have no much money for spend for that)

This part is the closest to the required specification:
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-st ... SOR/1.htmlUnfortunately its breakdown voltage (8.6V) is too high.
The closest alternative candidate is this 6.2V zener diode, but it is a relatively slow device:
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-st ... DE//1.htmlPerhaps the two devices, connected in parallel, would provide some measure of protection.

finally i found an old 80GB samsung HD080HJ hard disk which is not working but it has no physical damages on it...
so i checked the device and found out that it has the same kind of diode looks like my burnt one...but when i look @ it with a magnifying glass it had this different numbers on it (AE C626)
...well, can i replace my damaged one with it?
thank you for helping me out

Yes, that is perfect.
SMAJ5.0A, AE marking, 5V TVS diode, ST Microelectronics:
http://www.st.com/stonline/products/lit ... 4/smaj.pdfMake sure the striped end (cathode) goes to the supply, and the other end (anode) connects to ground.
"626" is a YWW (Year / Week) date code, ie week 26 of 2006. IIRC, "C" is the manufacturing location, China.
