Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a 1TB MyBook that lost it's mind. Windows sees an empty drive with no free space, but before it was quite full.
I download, installed and ran the following tools:
-- EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition 5.0.1
-- PC Inspector File Recovery
-- Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery
-- Disk Doctors NTFS Data Recovery
From what I could tell all of them threw up their hands almost immediately. The ones that actually recognized the drive at all appeared quite confused.
I believe that the problems are all file system related, but I may be completely hosed.
I will happily go in any direction that anyone points me.

Your drive most likely has a hardware problem, e.g. bad head or firmware.
Unfortunately, no software tool can work if the drive's hardware is broken.
We're just around the corner from you, and we're WDC authorized.
I'll send you a PM.

It seems like a firmware problem.
