Hi, I have a hard drive WD WD3200BEVT - 11ZCTO that when I connect to SATA or USB adapter does nothing, not spin, not make noise, not recognized by the bios. Is a PCB problem? maybe an internal problem?

Thanks a lot!

- Is this your drive or from someone else?
- What is the history of the drive - was it in an external enclosure or inside a PC?
- The drive was working OK at some time in the past, so what happened just before this problem started? (Dropped? Power surge? etc.)
- What level of electronics skill & test equipment do you have?
- Have you done any testing already on the drive's PCB for basic power voltages?

Hi,

- Is this your drive or from someone else? Is from one customer
- What is the history of the drive - was it in an external enclosure or inside a PC? was in external enclosure
- The drive was working OK at some time in the past, so what happened just before this problem started? (Dropped? Power surge? etc.) he says that probably a little impact, when he carry in the pocket of your jacket
- What level of electronics skill & test equipment do you have? I have a low level of electronic, only change the chips when I replace the pcb's but I would like to know to use a tester I don't know how improve if the power voltages arrive to the hdd
- Have you done any testing already on the drive's PCB for basic power voltages? no

Thanks

Pcb can be damaged with no sign of 'blast' i.e. fried mcu only. Check functionality of pcb 1st , then HDA, then firmware.

Is this your board?

If so, then check the +3.3V (Vio) and +1.2V (Vcore) test points.

Also check the anode of diode, D2. I suspect that this will be the -5V supply for the preamp.

@dcrecovery: Thanks for those answers. I see you've already had some advice about places to check for voltages, so I'll just make a couple of other comments:

Obviously that answer is a concern, but my (limited) experience with seized spindles is that there is typically at least a little sound from the motor in that situation, when it tries to turn, and you report no sound at all. I don't know whether the pros here, who have more experience of sized spindles, ever have totally silent drives in that state.

There are other things that can be quickly checked with an oscilloscope (if you have one?), to see whether the RAM is being accessed by the MCU on power-on (i.e. is the MCU successfully coming out of reset), or whether there is any attempt to drive the motor, but it's best to start with the basic voltage measurements, which you've already been given. Good luck :)
