I'm trying to recover data from a WD Drive, after it feel.
Model: WD6400AAKS-22A7B0
DCM: HANNHT2CA
Malaysia-21 AUG 2008

Reading Rom with PC3K i obtain 6 Modules (0A, 0B, 30, 47, 0D, 4F) in good conditions.

I can't access the SA, because (i suppose) the Head need to be replaced.

I'm looking for donor, but i'm confused because i found several Hard drive with the same fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth DCM value, but all with different made country (thailand).

I still have a chance to restore the patient with this Drives?

Have you read PC3k manual? For this drives way of choosing heads is totally different.
BTW if you are able read SA , most of all you don't need swap heads for the first.

No no, The SA is not accessible from PC3K.
Reading PC3K Manuals, i have not found information about Head Swap... i will try to read it again.

Wich parameters needs to match, in order to swap the head?

You don't have to backup all of your files, just the ones you want to keep.

Before you buy this HDD and try ot swap out heads do you have a clean room? Have you ever done a head swap before? Is this your HDD or a clients HDD that you are working on.

Note that you said that HDD was dropped. This can mean more damage to the drive than you are considering right now. You can have scratches on platters depending on when drive was dropped and if it was working when dropped. You can also have some alignment problems in platters on this one. You can also have some problems with the spindle motor being bent on this one.

You should know and understand all this one before you try to change out anything on this HDD especially if it does not belong to you and it belongs to one of your clients. They have trusted you with their data and you need to take care of this one. That is what DR is all about knowing what to do and how to do it so you do not lose the data from the clients drive on this one.

Yes i considered all these factors!
The hard disk belong to my first client/friend and he knows the risks.
The data are not too important and is a perfect way to start my carrier in DR, making experiment.
Working with PC-3000 i understand that the head should be the problem almost certainly.

Hai controllato BENE il drive prima di procedere e visto che hai accesso a un PC3000 hai provato ad accedere alle testine funzionanti , mappare e clonare PRIMA le testine funzionanti ? Pero', accertati di non avere ne' piatti danneggiati ne' testine danneggiate tali da rovinare i piatti.

I Wonder if you are not complicating your life instead of simplifying it. Did you check THOROUGHLY the drive and as you have access to a PC3000 did you try to access the working heads, build map and eventually clone FIRST the working heads ? In any case, be sure not to have media damage or damaged heads scoring platters.

Si BlackST, l'ho fatto ed ho anche controllato le testine una ad una (ho anche provato a leggere la SA lasciando solo la testina 0 e 1), ma durante la lettura della SA ho sentito una testina emettere brutti suoni, così ho spento il disco.
Molto probabilmente, almeno una superficie di un disco è stata graffiata.
Ora vorrei procedere al trapianto del gruppo testine, ma ho paura che gli eventuali graffi sul disco possano danneggiare la testina di nuovo.
Inoltre non riesco a reperire informazioni sul come allineare le testine dei WD.
Puoi darmi qualche consiglio a riguardo?

Yes BlackST, i do it, i also checked every head, but during the attempt of service area's reading i heard an abnormal noise and then i turned off the HDD.
probably now, i scratched one surface almost.
now i'd like to make a head swap, but i'm afraid to break the HSA again.
In addition to this, i can't find information about head alignment's procedure.

I am sorry but head alignment procedures do not exist. There are some myths that it is head stack screw, others say it is lid. So now it is you if you want to get into this field to research on this one. Find out how to align the heads on it. Too many years this one has given the most seasoned pros issues on it. WD is not an easy drive to work with especially if you do not understand it and have never done it before. There are lots of reasons behind this one.
