Samsung Spinpoint HD501LJ recoverable?

March 10th, 2012, 10:57

Hi!

The hard drive in question was mounted in my web/file server and has worked flawlessly for a few years. But unfortunately something seems wrong.

* When the computer is powered on the drive spins up and continues spinning like it does during normal operation. I can hear and feel it vibrating. And it makes no strange noises.
* The drive does not show up in BIOS. I have tried different SATA-cables, and different SATA-connectors on the mother board. I also tried it in two different machines with the same results.

So, is the drive recoverable or should I just suck it up, buy a new drive and curse a bit for not making more frequent backups?

Most likely a firmware problem on this model drive (and possibly bad sectors). Nothing that you as a "consumer" can do since fixing firmware problems on this drive requires expensive data recovery tools.
