I have a Seagyte Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c9d88cf6a794b110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD#tTabContentSupport inside an external case.

This case is meant to be powered by 12V but I plugged in my notebook powerline with ...19V. The HDD makes no sound anymore and is not accessible.

I already checked with a new external case. There is still no sound of a spinning HDD and no access.

I think about buying the exact same model and replacing PCB.
Are there any more steps I can do to evaluate what got destroyed?

I have some experinence in electronics (I hear you laughing: A guy that uses 19V instead of 12V tells us he has any knowledge at all about electronics)

If you post a pics of the PCB I think it probably has TVS (1x 5v & 1x 12v)
Search forum for TVS & how to test them.
If it is faulty you can remove it but you wont then have over voltage protection unless you solder another on in its place.
Warning though, how important is this data? if it is then get a dr company to sort it. As a DIY that goes wrong will end up making it cost a lot more.

Here is the PCB. I dont know if I had to unmount it for the pic.

I did not find TVS in the forum via search yet. If you have any link that would be great.

@happyspider:

As loki said, there are various risks with you doing any DIY, but if you accept the risk you may cause further problems and that the data has minimal value to you, then...

Yes, you do - its the component side which is of interest. I recommend that you use ESD precautions at all times when handling the drive and PCB.

This forum's search engine doesn't like 3-letter words.

search.php?keywords=TVS&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

A Google search is better:
http://www.google.com/searchq=%22tvs+di ... ddguru.com

See this article for help in identifying the components:
http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

In your case you need to remove the 12V TVS diode with flush cutters. However, be certain that your PSU is good, as you will no longer have overvoltage protection on the +12V supply. You can replace the diode with an SMBJ12A.
