Hi All,

I just wanted to drop a quick post to offer my thanks!

Long story short, I fried the WD10EACS-00D6B0 drive that was inside my Buffalo external hard drive, after connecting another power supply of supposedly the same spec, which turned out to be un-regulated. The drive contains years of archive data, and the failure managed to happen at the same time as me realizing that some of this data was missing from my desktop machine. Professional data recovery was out of the question (for reasons of cost mostly!).

After reading around and discovering that these drives are actually built with a degree of over-volt protection, a few simple tests with my multimeter and removing the TVS diode means that not only can I recover the data, but this drive can now be returned to normal service after the diode is replaced!

Thanks to all here who have provided advice on this subject!

Jon

Well done. There is a lot of useful information here if people are willing to put in some effort to search and find it themselves.
