Fried Seatage ST3500230AS - Free Agent Pro box

June 10th, 2011, 14:49

Unhappy user plugged in wrong power supply to his Free Agent backup drive and fried it. Smells horrible after I forcibly removed it from the case. (those things are a pain to open).

Is it possible to remove/cut the fried component in the bottom right and get the data off this drive?

Likely so, hopefully there are no other issues

My reading of the forum tells me this is a TVS diode?

Since it is crispy burnt and I can't read the numbers on it - does anyone know what to replace it with?

Indeed tvs. If you just want to extract the data and will no longer care about the drive possibly getting damaged at a later time, then you can just remove the burned tvs. But if you want to enable protection on the drive again, then you need to solder a new tvs. If you are going to solder a new one, then make sure you remove the burnt one cleanly. You can find such diodes on digikey website I think. Someone else on the forum will likely be able to give you more store names...

An SMBJ12A will do the job. Make sure the striped end (cathode) connects to the +12V supply.
