Burn Hard disk recovery posiblity

June 5th, 2011, 2:07

I have a fire burn 80 gb seagate hard disk. PCB, Sticker and all the plastic parts are totally burn. I have opened the hard disk in the clean room. I have attached the hard disk platter photos. Plastic parts are melt and water is found on the platter surface. is it possible to recover the data from such hard disk? If possible then How to find out the donor if no stickers are available?

Thanks,
Hemendra shah

If Curie point was reached, forget about data.

Maybe there's still hope, but it will be a painful and expensive process.
And of course 100% of data is a very remote possibility.
Anyway it's worth a try, if there's nothing more to loose. No rush, and use the right procedures ;).
What is interesting and challenging is the fact that it may be more of a data reconstruction than data recovery :)

BTW it should be easy to determine the temperature the disk has reached, much less easy to decontaminate the platters. I bet platters are also no more perfectly planar, but this can be determined later. The surface coating has started reacting to heat. It's an interesting case to study and eventually (if possible!) used as "guinea pig" to explore recovery possibilities.

Inside looks like Seagate 7200.11

That drive is a 7200.10 or Maxtor DiamondMax 21 (MDL: STM3250310AS for example)
Problem is that I think it can be either 160GB or 250GB.
Sometimes, gently cleaning the top of the drive (the label) with warm water or alcohol may help in seeing some of the specs.

Although unlikely, you can also ask the customer if they have any records from the drive's purchase like receipt or something, where it may show some additional info.

Also, if you clean the label good enough or whatever other way to find out the drive's S/N and model or P/N, can help you identifying more info on the Seagate website or "Google it" for warranty or whatever. By doing this, you can find out other specs.

The pcb is close match with the seagate 7200.10 series hard disk. Customer all computer records are burnt in the fire.
All the stickers are burn.

Well, i can recommend you something here to know your drive and probably helps you knowing it more

1st. seems the cause is Fire
2nd. try to ask about the other pc`s there which are working (maybe) and ask/have a look @ those drives

usually companies buy bulk computers and this is for sure one of them, u will know
and best guess u will find donor everything

SE.
