Hi All,

My drive is a famous Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ( DELL version ) - 80 gig SATA.

MODEL: 6Y080M0-42725L-AAA
DELL P/N = 0J9058
DS/N = SG-0J9058-19661-54I-A103 - Rev A00
FIRMWARE ??? = YAR51HW0
HEAD CODE = KGCA - for some reason this seems to be hard to find on an 80 gig drive.
5 Digit PCB Sticker Code = U8FYA
Main IC = AGERE C10-C1-040119500
SMOOTH Controller v1.2
PCB Number = 301861101 - SERIAL/CALYPSO/P11/THERM
Drive Made = April 18, 2005

My Symptoms are....

* Platters spin freely like they should, when moved thru side inspection hole.
* Stepper Motor ohms out at 1.4, 2.5, 2.5, 1.4 ohms
* There are no burnt parts on the board.
* Drive does not spin at all, but heads move...just move normally, no clunking sound or space noises.
* I've ohm'd out the heads on the 9 pin head connector below the PCB board ( Properly, I think ), but I'm not positive where pin 1 is....is pin 1 nearest to the SATA connector or nearest to the top of the drive ??? I've heard that if they read 0.0 ohms, the new PCB will be damaged, is this correct ???

I've read the MANY posts on this board and others and I'm still confused about which numbers REALLY matter when replacing the PCB ???? For example, what is the purpose of the HEAD CODES, why are there so many, can they be interchanged, and are they only needed when doing a physical head replacement ???, and whats the purpose of the 5-digit PCB Sticker ( U8FYA ) ??? I've heard many people say that almost all these numbers must match in order for the PCB to work.......so after all the work that everyone has done with this drive, I'm looking for someone who has preformed many swaps, and can clear this topic up once and for all. BTW, thanks for your time in advance !!!!

A really BAD idea .

* Stepper Motor ohms out at 1.4, 2.5, 2.5, 1.4 ohms

Useless test... if done THAT way 8)

* There are no burnt parts on the board.

Ininfluent or *MAYBE APPARENTLY*

* Drive does not spin at all, but heads move...just move normally, no clunking sound or space noises.

Impossible, or an exorcist rather than a DR expert is needed, or things are not like that

What does that mean exactly?

Does it mean you've had the lid off and moved the heads about by hand?

Like BlackST says, it doesn't make sense otherwise :?

Hi PCIMAGE,

No, I meant that the heads are moving as they normally would when they're seeking out the SA area, and obvoiusly not finding it since the platter is not spinning. They are not making the weird "space sounds" or making the "clunk of death" that you normally hear on WD drives. These drives are known for Bearing failures, so I removed the side hole sticker and made sure that the platter could spin freely, which it does. The lid has not been removed. The drive just stopped spinning from normal use. Which also brings me to another question about maxtors.....if you do remove the cover, will it affect the alignment of the heads like all the modern WD drives do ???

Really, I'm just looking to replace the PCB, but my real question is what codes ( out of the ones that I mentioned in my 1st post ) are really important to match a PCB to this drive ???
I have read many other posts, but everyone has a different answer as to what exactly is important and has to match, so I was looking for someone here who has done several PCB swaps on these Maxtors to answer those questions. :)

Another question I have is.....do you need to remove a P-List / G-List IC off of the old PCB and transfer it to the replacement PCB ???? If so, which one of the IC's is it ??? Thanks !!!

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE or there's something really WEIRD going on on your drive.
Moreover, if really happening, it would be badly scratching the platter.

Since when ?

At this point, I think the PCB is ONE of the least important problems...

FYI
If HSA move onto platters while platters are not spinning - heads will stick to platters
Calipsos are sticky bastards :)

That's the reason why something is not right in your story. You need to re-evaluate your statements :)

I think what they're all trying to say is it is not possible for the platters to not be spinning and the heads to come out from park. As simple as possible, it's like you buying a 2011 car and putting it in drive without applying the brake, hard drives have safety features built in to prevent damage to the platters like cars have safety features to prevent accidents.

Like Foghorn on loonie toons says, 'there's something goin on around here that just don't add up.'

Can you create a zoomed-in video of how you are testing this drive step by step. Ideally, the sound would be of good quality. Sound is critical in order to understand what is going on. Then you can get some more guidance here...
