Seagate Momentus 320GB 5400.5 & 500GB 7200.4 - Same failure

Hi all,

First post here so hello to everyone.

I have 2 drives - both Seagate Momentus - one 320GB 5400.5 and one 500GB 7200.4 (in external caddies) that have both failed in the same way. They emitted a quiet grinding/beeping when powered up. Upon inspection the bottom head of each stack is damaged. Does anyone know why these are failing in such a way?

I'm wondering whether a motor problem would be damaging heads?

If so would a headstack replacement work as a repair - or just damage another set of heads?

Many thanks

If the heads are visibly damaged I would guess impact or general rough handling

If your idea is just for repair, best thing is to throw it to the garbage and buy new ones.
