Hitachi HDS731050CLA362 no longer detected by bios

June 21st, 2011, 7:45

Hi,
I have a hdd that I was running in ahci mode and after unplugging and plugging back in the drive spinns up but is not recognized by the pc bios. Could this be a corrupt firmware? Guess I should have backed up!!! any way, appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Bruce.

Hi,

On those drives I would vote for FW or PCB issues, but only a proper diagnosis would tell.

WOW!! That was fast and thanks for the response. Is there any software I can use to diagnose it? Hitachi's utility software wouldn't even detect it.

No, as to run any software over the drive, it needs to detect the drive, and as you say, it's not detected, so no software solution is available.
To check it we need to go a bit further.

Hi,

You need to get a proper diagnosis from a DR pro.

Thank you dmarques for answering my questions. It seems pretty obvious the pcb or fw is bad. What would be involved in replacing this pcb? Do I need to solder the bios chip from the old pcb to the replacement pcb or can it just be swapped out? Besides model number, is there any thing else I need to be aware of to order a replacement pcb? Also, if I opted to pull the platter out and plase it in an identical drive, would I need to swap out the bios chip on the pcb as well? Sending the drive out to be fixed or diagnosed is not an option for me as I'm very capable of fixing many thing and besides, it's a good challenge.
Thanks,
Bruce.

FWIW, if you wish to replace the PCB, then you will need to transfer the NVRAM chip, or its contents, to your donor.

Someone else can tell you if this will be a waste of time and money.

Hi,

Regarding the PCB swap, you got the info you need.
Anything else beyond that, even if you are very talented in other things, will be a failure.
Besides that, this is not intended to be a DIY forum, explaining all the steps.
Sorry to disapoint you.
