HEAD STACK TRANSPLANTS

May 17th, 2011, 5:36

Ok so ive got like 10-15 old drives in the office and decided to play doctor. Ive been able to successfully remove the head stack with out allowing the heads to touch each other. I dint buy any special tool or anything 'yet' in just using the < shaped foil/plastic tip explained by Scott Moulton. What i dont understand is how

(1) its going to be possible to put the new head stack in without having them crash on the platter/s once you slide them off the < tool
(2) how the < tool will not touch the platter surface at some point while trying to get the heads back on the platters

im assuming that both above cases are definate no no's in the quest for data retrieval. Or do you have some lee-way as long as you dont get particles on the surface
as per usual i appreciate any input.

There's really only sure way to get your answers to this, and it's to keep practising, experiment, and see what works - and what doesn't.

Hddsurgery tools are better quality than hdrc online.
But hdrc are cheaper as they are made out of plastic, just had a quote for £540 for the 8 sets

hddsurgery is way too expensive, i will have to do plastic fer now and hope it goes well.... im looking at hddsurgery and it seems like 1 tool is 500 Euros  which means with a lil extra i can buy all the plastics tools from hdrc for the price of 1 tool from hddsurgery.. if thats the casen im not mistaken........ thats obscene lol

Tools from hddsurgery are for a lifetime.
Better to pay more and be sure of the quality than buy cheap tools that can ruin a case.

My 2 cents.

Ya, I'm going to say the rubber tube thing or the foil, is like carrying a box of wet dynamite around.
Would you do brain surgery with an icepick? And lose someone's memories?

i am more than happy to sell my HDRC set of tools to you, if you are interested pm me
As for helpdisc tools, you get what you pay for a tool that will work each and everytime you use it and it will work perfectly, it is expensive but well worth the money if you need quality tools.
