Long time lurker and first post here; First and foremost, many thanks to the contributers, your posts have saved my bacon once or twice in the past.

My reason for posting is my "better" half has erased my LACIE external hard drive. The settings within the OS was just to erase the files, not to write zeros or delete the data so it is unrecoverable. The dialogue box said "most data recovery software can recover files should this option be checked"

I have run Data Rescue 3 and have only managed, after a 2 day scan, to recover some of my file with a raw recovery.

Is there a way to return the drive to its original state with the file structure intact?

I cannot afford to send it to a recovery company as I litterally have children to pay for.

any and all help would be most appreciated. TIA

Heya m8. Uv been using ur Lacie with MAC or PC? Was it formated in NTFS or FAT32 or maybe HFS ? When it comes to HFS iv had some recoveries where R-Studio for mac showed me structure , but Data Rescue didnt and vice versa. Also the scan took to long. I suspect that the drive may have bad/slow sectors. That can be a negative influence on the recovery as well.

To me, this paragraph is confusing.
- How exactly did the erasure take place?
- Does erasure mean formatting or deleting?
- What are those settings within the OS? Or where? Can you post a picture of this?
- Unless Lacie has some sort of built in management software, it is strange that an OS would prompt with a "most data recovery software can recover files should this option be checked" message.


It really depends on what exactly happened. However, if you were able to get few files only after a RAW scan, then chances are slim to none. Either way, more info is needed to make sense of the entire story.

Lacie quadra in raid5 ? If you try to recover, keep in mind it's GPT table probabely. I'm not sure, but I think there's a proprietary controler inside, so recover has to be made with the box, not outside the NAS.

Realistically it should always be built outside of the unit. for the most part when a Quadra arrives for data recovery it is often impossible to determine if the unit is actually functional. To minimise risk and ensure maximum recoverability it is always better to be in control of everything yourself as opposed to being dependent on potentially failed units.

also, I have no problems building Quadra arrays outside of the unit...

TY einstein9 and hddguy for precision, I haven't this model so I can't be sure. And what about GPT table ? Am I right with this assumption ?
BTW, in prevision I could have this kind of NAS to deal with, are there special things to know about raid structures with this product ? Unusual stripe size, delay or SLT ?
