250 GB sata laptop hdd problem

when i switch on the system i getting VA HALT: Read partition error.
I tried to install xp cd in my system but dvd drive is not reading and also xp cd is not reading. is this hdd is really faulty.if any solution for this error please inform me my hdd is 250 GB 2.5 size.

I think you have MORE THAN 1 problem on your system... and the HDD is the last.

( Maybe it's the 11-11-2011 :D ? )

Sorry, but it looks like to be computer basic:

1. Change start order in the CMOS = CD/DVD must be first drive in order to start from installation CD

2. partition error might result from one defect out of various ...

Simplest way (if no other hardware test tool is available) - get a freeware like hddsentinel from
internet, install it on a diferent system, connect ths suspicous hdd into that system as 2nd drive,
start the 2nd system - and check the 2nd (suspicous) drive with that freeware.
If drive is ok, then proceed with XP installation on laptop

3. if xp will not install you have either defect cd, defect dvd/CD-drive or defect laptop
