Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I want to change the erase wait delays from 350ms to over 10ms. Old posts suggest that I stop scan and edit mhdd.cfg file. But mhdd.cfg is not written on floppy. I suppose it is written to RAM disk. Can I change the erase wait delay? I have a Packard Bell laptop that will not stay continue to run OS though it stays booted. It runs fine from a Linux OS boot disk. Disk and memory pass all tests. But toward middle of the disk there are many areas of disk with many delays of over 150ms. Perhaps this computer is just not tolerant of such a disk. If I erase all delays longer than whatever I set erase delays to (50ms?) will the computer then not write to those blocks where there are delays of over whatever I set the erase delays to.
Thanks
