Hi,

I have here a modern Seagate Barracuda 1TB that spins but is not detected in the BIOS :
Code:
Model: ST1000DM003
PN: 9YN162-135
FW: NDP3
Date: 12454
Site: SU
PCB: 100664987 REV A
MCU :
   LSI
   864002
   SEAGATE
   TNNBB267
VCM controller :
   Texas Instrument 980    G2
   SH6968B      A
BIOS Chip :
   Winbond
   ...very small chars...
   1208

I also have a healthy drive of the same model, but with different PCB and chips:
Code:
Model: ST1000DM003
PN: 1CH162-510
FW: CC47
Date: 14054
Site: SU
PCB: 100717520 REV B
MCU :
   LSI
   869002V0
   SEAGATE
   TPPPT942
VCM controller :
   SMOOTH
   DILLON
   SEAGATE
    78034 (or 78014?)  V5  D
BIOS Chip :
Too small to read, but not a Winbond one.

The design of the circuits of the two PCBs is quite different.

When putting the PCB coming from the healthy drive on the damaged one, the model name (ST1000DM003) is detected in the BIOS.

This make me think that the (first) issue comes from the circuit board, and could be a firmware issue rather than the traditional "bad heads" one.
The PCB of the defective drive doesn't have a smell of ozone and doesn't prevent the hard drive to spin.

I planned to purchase the same drive with same PCB first, to do a BIOS swap, but if this is a firmware issue it would be useless.
I unfortunately don't have a board like the PC-3000 UDMA or MRT yet.

So, what would you advise in this case?
Buy a new board, swap the BIOS and if this does not suffice try flashing the latest BIOS?
Thanks

Need log terminal.

"BIOS" absolutely nothing to do with.

It can not alter on the faulty HDD.
Only in the proper drive.

Have firmware issue, possible mechanical. Bad sectors almost guaranteed.

@Tomset: The BIOS just shows that the drive was not detected at hardware level and that there is an issue with the PCB, most probably the firmware.

@labtech: Thanks.
