Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hey guys,
a friend just gave me his WDC WD1502FAEX-007BA0 1500GB.
He told me that, after some mb of data copied, the drive starts "ticking" and explorer.exe is fu****.
So I booted to MHHD32 v 4.6 and started ERASE. After 644mb I got an "Catastrophical Error".
After that I tried SCAN with Erase Delays ON but after about 5min or so it stops again and instead of blocks I only see a "w".
Could someone just tell me what might be the Problem?

Internal problems (e.g. head / media problems) seem most likely, although others are possible. I see no chance for DIY recovery here, so since you don't need the data, IMHO buying a new drive is your cheapest option.

You can wait to see if someone else has a different view, based on those symptoms, but I see no point in further investigation if you don't need data recovery (which would cost more than a new drive)
FYI this thread was moved, as you posted it in the wrong section (this topic is not related to new DR technology etc.). When you get a notification in your email to read an update to the thread, that will still link to the correct place.
Good luck

Sorry for the wrong Topic. As you can see Im new to this Board.

Data Recovery isnt even necessary. Everything I need is safe. I just wanted to get the Drive back to work again.

Can't you RMA it?

Probably NO since the disk prices are almost 3x'ed. A cheaper and quicker option would be finding someone who can refurbish it PROFESSIONALLY, eventually defeating bad head or surface - this means downsize. I am a bit distant...
