All,

Have a Maxtor 120GB with at least one bad head. Looking for a donor for heads, below is the best I could find. I'm thinking it may work, but was hoping for a second opinion or two to solidify things.

Patient:
6Y120M013741A
Code: YAR511W0
N,M,G,D
S/N: Y3Pxxxxx

Donor:
6Y120M013731A
Code: YAR511W0
K,M,B,D
S/N: Y3Pxxxxx

Thanks in advance,

Dizi

Match the N,M of the N,M,G,D

and the 74 from the model number

We've always done the first 2 of the 4 character code (i.e. N,M) and the full model (or at least first 6 or 7 characters if that wasn't possible) and had luck with it. I know the N,M is preferred, but how much is it a requirement? At first glance we haven't had much luck with finding parts for this, nothing with N,M has even popped up thus far in our searching. So we're wondering at this stage what we could work with.

I think matching the N,N as a rule should be a good idea. I have had successful repairs with non-identical matches. I would say that this is because there is a certain tolerance, certain codes will work with certain other codes, but because it is not confirmed which can be cross compatible an identical match is preferred as it carries with it the highest chance of success/compatibility.

IF you really know how these puppies work, you can succeed even using apparently "should not work" headsets. What really matters is not necessarily in the NMGD / KMBA ecc. codes.

Care to share then?

Best we could come up with are:
    6Y120M013641A
    6Y120M013731A

Both match the first 3 of the serial, full match on N,M,G,D, and also full match on YAR511W0 code. What are you guys thoughts on those?

Personally, I'd go ahead and swap heads on this.
