Samsung s2 portable 1tb making clicking noises

January 13th, 2012, 8:57

Hello guys,

I bought a samsung s2 portable external hard drive a few months ago and everything was working fine. One day i connected it into a tv and watched a film and from that time whenever i connect it on my pc it sometimes makes a clicking noise. The clicking noise most likely is the pen on the hard drive not working properly to read things from it but i cant understand why this happened right after i connected it to a TV. Is there a problem with portable external hard drives being connected on tv's? Did it maybe get over charged when on TV or didnt get much charge out of the TV and caused a problem? Does anyone have an idea about PORTABLE external hard drives and TV's?

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean, does it only click sometimes?

If it's not getting enough power then that could be a reason for the noises. Perhaps the TV's USB doesn't give enough power for a 1TB 2.5" which is hungry for power in USB standards.

I see this often on the 1TB WD Passports.

Yeah i know it sounds weird...To be fair it was clicking every time it was in use thus i made the comment about the pen reading the hard drive but today it suddenly stopped doing it. i dont think im out of the woods though. you recommend then to not use it again on a tv? I tried searching the internet for any problems about connecting a portable external hard drive on tv but i couldnt find anything thats why i made my post. Do you know how much power it needs from TV so i can check the TV before connecting it again?
