Missing Partitions

January 11th, 2012, 13:20

Hi
Im hoping someone will be able to help me.
I have a 2TB hard drive which i have partitioned into 3 partitions, (249GB for C:, 1000GB for D: data, 613GB for E: data)
Now the 1000GB partition which is filled with data has dissappeared from My computer. It happened after installing a dual boot with linux and using the 613GB as unallocated space for the linux partitions, (I have since removed the linux and partitions on the E: 613GB and created a ntfs primary partition again)

I have uploaded a screenshot that you can see that partition is not in my computer and in Disk management it only shows by "Disk 0" and not under volumes.

I have tried using 'Diskpart' To assign a drive letter but under 'list volume' nothing appears.

I dont know if there would be a MBR issue on the partition,
any help would be greatly appreciated as i do not want to lose the data and can see that the partition is still there in a sense.
Thanks

Check it with winhex to see what is going on

Stop writing to the drive or changing anything (includes format, etc)

Thanks, gonna try winhex and see what it says, ill keep you posted
I havent changed anything on the partition thats missing the volume(writing, format etc..), only partition i changed and formatted was the partition 4 which is still working.

What would i be looking for or need to do in winhex?

Well, Maybe Partition lost only

try freeware: partition find & mount
see if it does find it quick or not

Winhex, as they mentioned here

Open Disk (lost partition) using winhex, and post the image here

remember (read-only) mode

Thanks i did try find & mount, but when i scanned the 2TB it only found the C: and E: partitions.
In Winhex i can open the partition and see the files but not sure from there what i should be trying, Will post the image now.

What do you mean by (read-only mode)

Yes those are the correct files, But dont have enough free space to recover everything, Will try loading partition recovery wizzard from boot to see if it can repair it first hopefully.

That would be a terrible idea i think.

Just connect an external usb device and recover the files winhex found, as einstein9 suggests.
There is a typical rule in these types of cases in Data Recovery: When you see 'em, grab 'em.

Unless you don't care about the data.

Thanks, Think im gonna do that, The evaluation copy i see only allows up to size 200Mb files, Anyone know of a freeware or cracked program that would let me do 600gb of large files?

Sorry, freeware programs?

Pay for a winhex license.

Next, consider how much you were willing to pay for your data. If your data is important, that would be just a fraction of the amount you will pay for a license.

Otherwise, try Linux. A forum member has developed a fantastic Hex Editor for Linux, so there you go.

Well I managed to get a copy of Active@ file recovery for windows and it worked like a charm, actually was the only software that managed to find the partitions as well on the drive...(and i tried quite a few) So once i have retrieved all the data i can also have a look at trying to restore the partition before deleting it.

Yes but no cracks. You could have used Dmde which allows the user to recover single files of any size. Anyway it seems you are sorted now. To restore/repair the partion with freeware again try Dmde. Easeus or Testdisk might be usefull.

Boot to DOS and run testdisk to fix the MBR. Although you may have GPT partitions... be sure to use a newer version of it. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk At that link, they have downloads for bootable images, or try Hiren's BootCD.
