Another WD 2TB 20EARS green issue - ABRT on all sector reads

WD 2TB 20EARS green from an external black enclosure
Standard sata drive

Spins and no obvious noises

Can get the drive passport via Victoria etc
and shows the correct drive and number of LBA's
and not locked

SMART shows 733 current pending sectors (in red)

Test read (verify or read, ignore failures) shows ABRT for all sectors

Is it a likely to be an easy fix for a professional?
(If so, I'll set yet another potential customer to some of the UK professionals on here)

I might try some WD techniques to read sectors / modules (non destructive stuff only)
just to see if those reads work

PS It a big black plastic WD external enclosure, but no model number on it

I dont think the USB to SATA adapter was doing encryption or exposing the usual WD SMartWare drive
But possibly it was

PCB says OASIS DESKTOP 1607P

But even if it was, would expect to be able to read the raw, encrypted, sectors rather than get ABRT

Do you have PC3K? If so this seems to be a problem that is getting more common on these 2TB drives and there is a work around with PC3K.

INIC-1607P is not encrypted.

Notice that there are "P" and "E" versions of several bridge ICs. The latter are encrypted.

For info. The mhdd scripts for reading 'blocks' 21 and 22 on WD drives seem to work and return the expected contents
A simple mhdd script for reading normal user areas sectors via ata commands looks like it errored out

Also could be a drive that fails it's initialization process, we are seeing a TON of these.

This symptom can be caused by almost all of the different things that can be wrong with a hard drive

Like people are saying, this could be a lot of things.

Most common issue we are finding on these seem to be a weak/bad head(s) preventing the drive initialising the translator properly.

Requires proper diagnosis. We can do this.

As fzabkar says,this is not encrypted. But that would not affect the reading of sectors with MHDD anyway.

You might like to invest in WDR-UDMA or WD HD Pro (US$80 - $150). Otherwise I could help you read the other MODs using MHDD scripts.

That said, you should be able to read all the lower numbered MODs (00 - FF) using http://nazyura.newmail.ru/Mavr_r.zip. However, you will need to configure your SATA port for legacy IDE mode so that it occupies port address 0x1F0 or 0x170. I've just been through this with someone else ...
