WD2500JB - DOES NOT SPIN - HAVE DIODE READINGS

HDD: WD2500JB-00REA0
PCB# 2060-701292-002 REV A

i was working on the computer and all off sudden computer got restarted and then now it does not recognize the hard drive in computer.

i tried to connect the hard drive in other computer as secondary but still does not recognize. and when you touch it it does not spin. when you start the pc it does not even clicking or do anything.

i open then pcb board, but no sign of burning at any component. and tested the TVS diode D5 and D6 and 0 ohm resister R81 and R82 and it reading as follows

with my digital multi meter
multimeter on 200 ohm and 2000ohm setting
@200 ohm
D5: one way: open (OL) other way: open (OL)
D6: one way: open (OL) other way: open (OL)
R81: 0 ohm (ok)
R82: o ohm (ok)
@2000 ohm
D5: one way: 524 other way: open (OL)
D6: one way: 675 other way: open (OL)
R81: 0 ohm (ok)
R82: o ohm (ok)
multimeter on Diode testing mode setting
D5: one way: open (OL) other way:‎ 523
D6: one way: open (OL) other way: 672

now i was reading the other forum on HDD. i found that there are other schottky diode D3, and D4.

i tested those 2 diode with my multimeter and reading is as follows
@ 200 ohm setting
schottky diode D3: one way: 0.4 other way: 0.4
Schottky diode D4: one way: open (OL) other way: 94.5
@2000 ohm setting
schottky diode D3: one way: 001 other way: 001
Schottky diode D4: one way: oepn (OL) other way: 148
@ diode mode setting
schottky diode D3: one way: 001 other way: 001
schottky diode D4: one way: open(OL) other way: 149
now i dont know what should be the value of mesurement for schottky diode D3 and D4.

also when i mesure the resistor R64 and R59, it shows open ( no continuty).

so by checking all readings above- is there any idea what could be wrong?

The TVS as you say one way open other way open check and search on TVS on this one that is where your problem is on this. You should find a lot of info on TVS. If open and bad can be removed and data copied off but if removing then there is no surge protector on the pcb and if another surge can fry more than you want on this one. So becareful when removing these and copying off your data on your HDD. You should look at your PS for you computer to see if you have a problem on this one and fix it too.

There is nothing wrong with the TVS diodes.

An "open" TVS diode does not need to be removed. That's because it is already open. :-)

As for the Schottky diodes, D3 is testing bad. If it's part of the Vcore supply for the Marvell MCU, then I'd say that the MCU is dead. In this case a board swap and U12 transfer would be the only reasonable DIY option. To this end, I would first confirm that there is no short between pins 4 and 8 of U12.

If the ROM is corrupted, the drive won't spin either, but that problem is unusual.

so how to identify pin 4 and 8 on U12 chip and what is the testing reading should be.

if as you say its shorted - is there any hope for data recovery??

Those two pins are the corner pins.

Consult the relevant datasheet for the pinout diagram:

If there is a short, then carefully desolder and lift one of the pins. If the short remains with the IC, then your IC is bad. Let us know what you find.

i have checked the reading for continuity on pin 4 and 8 at 200 ohm setting and its does not show any resistance so its not continue(OL).

but because my D5 and D6 diode shows (OL) in both direction at 200 ohm settings,(but at 2000 ohm settings it shows Open on one direction and has reading in reverse ) does it mean that i did not had any protection against voltage.

D5 and D6 read OK, so it doesn't appear that your drive experienced an overvoltage, at least not a sustained one.

I would transfer U12 to a replacement PCB and hope for the best.

As for resistors R64 and R59, their values should be marked on them.

ok to day i found a HDD which is not same capacity as my dead hdd. Dead hdd is WD2500JB-00REA0. and i found a hdd WD1600bb-00RDA0. but the PCB board on the this donor 160 GB hdd is the exact same number 2060-701292-002 rev A.
so my question is can i use this doner PCB to the Dead HDD. or the number and parameter on both HDD should be exact match.
