Hot Swap:
1. power on a matching donor drive
2. spin the motor down
3. remove PCB and connect to defective drive (without disconnecting cables)
4. spin the motor up

Smart Hot Swap:
1. copy necessary SA modules to the donor drive from the defective drive
2. power on the matching donor drive (with defective drive's PCB, sometimes)
3. spin the motor down
4. remove PCB and connect to defective drive (without disconnecting cables)
5. spin the motor up

I don't recommend trying this unless you have properly diagnosed the damaged drive, have the right tools for the job and know exactly what you are doing.
