wd400bb head swap issue

April 15th, 2012, 16:54

Went to swap out the single head from a wd400bb with a "doner" unit that was built 2 days prior to my targets manuf date and to my suprise...since both model numbers and dcm numbers are the same on both units, the single head from my "broke " drive is on the bottom and the replacement is on the top.
So...is there any way to tell by the model/dcm/ or any other number if the head is on the top or the bottom?

The heads map in ROM will tell you. 0 is bottom; 1 is top.

Donor Drives can give you information on head map before you purchase the drive. So you can buy a good replacement for what you need.

Be aware that these drives have alignment issues.
