Hi All,

Some time ago I bought a brand new WD My Passport Essential 750GB on USB 3 (WDBACX7500ABK-00)...

I've tested it for awhile and it was running fine, until I decided that my data is safe and I can now reinstall my laptop - just after I reinstalled the system - I connected the disk to laptop and... nothing really happened - disk behaved fine (with two exceptions: no led blinking, visible in system as "WD BAD PCB USB Device" with 0B as space on it) - but the spinning is fine, disk reacts on connecting like usually...
As you can imagine - I was not really enjoying that situation, but also have not been throwing anything _hard_ here and there - so no real physical damage happened to this disk...

I tried to open the case (after contacting WD support) to connect it "without the USB" to the computer, but you know already, that the USB was built-in...

Anyway - that happened some time ago, and now I finally want my pictures back from it (of course without paying too much for professional recovery)...

I've looked on this forum a lot and there are a lot of cases with these WD disks, but I found none that would match _exactly_ my criteria:
1) disk led is OFF
2) device name is "WD BAD PCB USB Device" (what a name!)
3) the USB connector is fine
All the other cases were covered (spinning OK, no clicking, just like the drive would normally work)

So, let me ask you - has anyone else seen similar issue?
How were you able to get your data from the failing disk?

I've looked around for similar disks, but now I cannot find the WDBACX7500ABK-00 version, there are other versions like: WDBACX7500ABK-EESN - does the PCB match?
I also learned that the firmware is stored on the plates, so the PCB needs to match...

Due to the encryption - I somehow reject myself from preparing the SATA interface attached to some various points in the PCB...

So, are there any other solutions (except going to Professionals?)
I really would like to get my personal data out of that disk, but going to professional service is not an option for now...

I tried even to initialize it (I know, I know) - but that cannot be done either...

Does anyone know of a method that could help me get my files from that disk?

Aaaah - one more thing: I have not tried freezing yet

On forum there is a lot on encrypted WD drives. You can search on some. There is a guy out of Kwait who says he can do this one. Contact him and see what he would need from you in order to unlock this HDD for you.

If the reported serial number is an ASCII-hexadecimal representation of the serial number on the drive's label, then this may tell us something. You can leave off the last few digits if you are concerned about privacy or whatever.

The reason I asked is because, AIUI, the drive's serial number (ie the number on the drive's label, not the enclosure) is retrieved from the System Area on the platters rather than from the PCB.

That said, I would have expected the serial number to be reported as in the following thread, not as you have indicated:

Specifically, instead of "WXP1E80S5700T", I would have expected "57585031453830533537303054".

Just got my WD Passport 750gb caught with the exact same problem showing "WD BAD PCB USB DEVICE" in the Device Manager. My exact model would be: WDBACX7500ASL-EESN

Googled for this problem and find surprisingly little amount of people facing issues regarding this. Just wondering if the OP ever successfully recovered his files? Would like to know how if he did.

If somehow the OP isn't around anymore, i would also hope that someone out here can help me with this. Im in the dark here =(

Are you suggesting me to first check if the drive reads/detects with the "Victoria" software then look for a guy called "Kwait" on this forums?

Remember this advice my friend. always try to google n find at least headlines which might help better than waiting for replies either from me or any other here.

and we All use only 17% max. (not sure, but sure less than 20%) of our Unlimited Internal Mem. chip. the rest of it needed to be trained to contain more data inside.

Used Victoria, no luck in detecting my drive... only showing my internal drives...

So should i be looking for the Kwait guy now?
