How to recover Datas from a failed Hard Drive

Recently, My laptop hard drive failed fro no reason. Three days before, i started noticing that my laptop started to boot very slowly. It took almost 10 minutes to open the desktop and even so, I saw performance penalty. I restarted, but it did'nt help. As days passed by, it took even longer and now (at present) it won't boot. just blank.
AT that time, i could'nt say what was wrong but as i googled my problem, i came to the very conclusion that my hard drive was failing. Unfortunately, i could'nt save any of my datas.
Well, my real question is, IS IT POSSIBLE TO RECOVER DATAS FROM MY FAILED DRIVE. If so... How can i do it, and what is the procedure.
Recently I read on a magazine that the datas can even be recovered from Hd's which have been dipped into the water and kept for a week. But thats not my case...
just concluding it.... 
and comforting myself...

Your data can almost certainly be recovered, but you must make a choice if it is important data or something you can risk losing.
It sounds like the drive is failing rapidly but if you don't really care about your data and accept the risks of DIY then you can try cloning it with some non-windows software like dd_rescue or Media Tools Pro.
But this could well KILL your drive FOR GOOD along with its data, it's your choice.
But if the data is important then seek assistance from a pro with the necessary hardware and knowledge to recover your data safely.
