 Post subject: Broken seagate free agent go - to freeze or not to freeze?

That is the question.


My clumsy brother dropped my free agent go and now when I plug it in it makes a beeping noise, flashes it's lights and doesn't get recognised by the computer.

I'm not too fussed because I had backed up it's data onto ANOTHER external HDD about 30 days ago, so i'm only missing a few movies and funny internet pictures I added last week. Well, i'm a bit curious in case i've missed anything else, hence why I want to check.

Is it worth freezing it for a few hours? If I do this can I still claim my warranty? or send it off for the data recovery? Does anyone know what the above signs usually indicate (actually memory loss, broken connector etc)?

Should I freeze it and then send it for data recovery or vice versa if one fails?

Hi, do not freeze drive. Internal damage, do not open either. You cannot claim warranty, it was dropped and can be proven.

In Canada i know ppl claim warranty left and right on dropped drives.

Yeah...it drives me nuts how many of my clients will send a dropped drive in for warranty replacement. The sad part is, they usually get it without any questions being asked. If I drive my car for a couple of years and decide to wrap it around a tree, do you think I can get it replaced under warranty too?

And this is why I want to check before sending it in. Seagate say i'm in warranty and that it covers accidental damage. Sorry if it annoys any of you, but that's there policy and I have a right to use it if I want.

Funnily enough, i decided to give my HDD a little whirl, didn't put in in the freezer, just left it alone for a few hours.

Working fine now for some reason, very odd. It lasted for about 2 hours while I made sure I transfered some movies onto my mac.

Comments not directed to OP. It is a matter of honesty. If individual tell truth about what happened to drive and it is replaced, as policy so be it. If after dropping drive they say oh it just stopped working for no reason, then that is not good.
