Hi,
as the title says, my Western Digital WD20EARS 2.0TB HDD just stopped working and disappeared from My Computer while Windows was up and running.

When it happened, I was recording a video using FRAPS, with the video being saved to said hard drive. Steam was also running in the background, downloading a game, also to that same hard drive. About seven minutes into the recording, the game froze, FRAPS stopped recording and Steam crashed ("steam.exe has stopped working"). When checking to see what was up, I noticed that the drive was gone from the My Computer overview window.

I immediately rebooted and opened up the BIOS, and it did not detect the drive anymore. It did, however, detect my two other HDDs, one of which contains the Windows installation, just fine.

I shut down the computer and checked on the cables (power supply and SATA). No matter how I set the cables up, the WD20EARS did not get detected while the other two worked perfectly. I also tried using multiple different SATA ports, with no success. Upon switching the computer on, I can clearly hear the HDD spinning up. It's also vibrating and getting warm, but I can in no way access it. It sounds fine, there are no audible clicks, cranks or anything.

Is the drive dead? Probably, but how could I best access the data on it? It contained multiple programming projects of mine that were pretty complex and that I had spent a lot of time on - also, lots of personal videos, pictures, texts, games... the total data loss is about 1,4TB. But I also wouldn't want to spend a whole bagload of money on it, because I don't have any means to pay too large sums.

OS is Windows 7 64-bit, MoBo is ASRock H67-M (B3). The other two HDDs are both Seagate, both have a capacity of 500 GB, and both work fine.

Any help on how to get the HDD running again so I can get the data off of it and onto a new one would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,
ThePaSch

Those drives CAN have pretty nasty fw problems, so it can vary quite a lot.

Anywhere between £250 and £500 i would guess, depending on how difficult.
