hi guys. i have a hitachi hard drive that at one time was a part of a nas enclosure. i brought said hard drive home from iraq foolishly in my checked baggage and sure enough, the hard drive was been damaged. the drive started clicking within 30 seconds of starting up. i initially cracked open the nas enclosure, as i had trouble with the enclosures going bad while the hard drives remained intact. ive held onto it for a while due to some sentamental items on the hard drive that the back up discs were destroyed for. the hard drive is long since out of warrenty, so knowing that i really have nothing else to lose since i cant afford 1000 dollars + to send it to a clean lab, i got the appropriate tool and opened the top up to see what exactly was happening internally. when it powers up, the platters spin immediatly and with no obstructions, and the beeping coincides with the drive heads going from the hard stop off of the platters, to the spindle in the middle, and then bounces back. even though i know a clean room would have been much better, is thier a way i can recover anything off of this drive? thanks!

Sorry its not the answer you hoped for but just to let you know that BlackST & Northwind are very kowledgeable & respected members here on this forum.
You could always send it off to a dr pro for a quote & then decide? or at the very least put it away somewhere safe until you can afford the cost of recovery?

I think OP implies he/she wants to recover data DIY. That's why I said NO. They have already tinkered with the drive far too much, chances are now recovery is not possible.

Agreed that they definately cant but maybe a pro can? but it would need to be inspected first to confirm yes or no.
There would be no harm sending it off for a quote to see if its at least an option? If it is then they would need to decide if its worth the cost or not? at worst they might have to pay an inspection fee due to previously opening the drive.

Agreed . They should be prepared for a higher quote now that they opened the drive, and assuming a good pro could recover data off it.

yes, i am trying to recover it do it yourself, because i already know im not going to have the spare money anytime without winning the lottery, unfortunatly. i had someone try to tell me that data could be recovered via trying to put the platters in a cd drive, but that didnt make sense seeing as how hard drives are magnetic vice optical like a dvd or cd. i was also curious as this is my first time actually breaking open a hard drive (as in the past ive always had backups and always have done replacement parts vice actually trying to repair the part) and was curious as to what the internal issue actually was, and if i could actually fix it. i was also unfamiliar with the full internal design, and was curious as to the reasonability of attempting to remove the actual platters and placeing them into a diffrent hard drive and seeing if that would work, but even though i could unscrew the platters, i dont see how i can do that without scratching the platters. the only thing that i could see in thier that i could possibly reasonably get into is the drive head magnets and controller from the top, but were i to do that im not sure as to how to fix the internal controls. all this on top of worrying about all the possible things that could go wrong as that i am doing this as a do it yourself outside of a clean lab, praying that i dont add to the already list of things that could easily go wrong.

Wow U got the appropriate tools? A torx screw driver? I think U should listen to your friend and plonk it to a cd drive.....

Jokes aside. Its a lost cause for your data.

this one required a small star screwdriver, gotta love my work, i get access to all sorts of goodies just no clean labs, lol. might just end up seeing how far i can shotput it.
