Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I've been reading several topics on this forum and probably reached to the conclusion that some firmware area of my WD3200KS-00PFB0 became damaged. Some years ago, I was playing with some HDD tools and the disk stopped spinning up on the boot by itself. It can only be put to work if I first execute Data Lifeguard Diagnostics and data can be properly accessed.
I guess that flashing a memory could be managed: I could put an Arduino or a Bus Pirate to work on this area.
Can you guys help me clarify what might be going on with this particular disk?
