My Western Digital 1TB Caviar PCB board has burned out. I've done a little reading about TVS diodes, but I'm not convinced that's the issue. Can anyone help diagnose the issue and let me know if it is fixable? I just want to run the drive long enough to get data off but it won't power up

That chip at the back (sorry my camera is not very good) looks to be the part burnt, appears to be U1 on the board

Are you good with soldering chips?

Nothing to do with TVS, the motor chip is badly burnt.

The chip at U12 is the ROM.

You need to move this chip to a new PCB with the same P/N

Having said that, the burn seems very bad and preamp damage is likely

Where can I find the P/N on the board? There is 01NF stamped on the bottom of the power/SATA connectors, does that sound right?

Is this possible for me to fix? or is any data recovery possible, or is to likely to be prohibitively expensive/impossible?

The number is on the other side of the PCB. Will be something like 2060-xxx etc

The PCB imprinted number on the none component side starts with 2060-
But as pcimage has said you would need to desolder & swap the U12 (8 pin chip) over from the damaged pcb to the donor pcb. This chip holds unique adaptive information for your drive.

Also due to the burnt / damaged Smooth chip there is possible damage to the internal component called the preamp.
If you replace the pcb & swap the U12 chip over then fit this to the hard drive & power it up & the preamp is damaged it could damage your donor pcb.

If your accepting the risks of DIY then a pcb swap & U12 swap is all you can do. If this works then great if not the a dr pro is required.
