My laptop crashed I am attempting to retrieve the data from the HDD and put it on my new desktop.

I am not sure if I have an IDE or a SATA hard drive. The HDD states it is a "40 GB AT Disc Drive" and came from an HP 4900ze laptop.

I assumed a SATA HDD External Box would work, however it does not fit.

Can anyone tell me:

1. What kind of HDD this is.
2. What kind of cable I'll need to link this up to my Desktop (It would be preferred if someone knew the name/link location of a USB HDD External Box of which I could put the HDD disc into and just plug in the USB)

The pictures show the type of HDD I have and the input where it use to go. It doesn't look like "pins" are involved.

As you can see from the photos, my HDD connector does not look like either one of those displayed by that website.

Its a plastic adapter attached over the pins to make it easier to disconnect. If your not sure on how to remove it seek a DR professional.

That "edge connector" should just pull off to reveal the actual drives connectors.

That's right, if you pull off that plastic connector, you would reveal the pins. It is an IDE 2.5" drive, you can buy a 2.5" IDE to USB external case (you'll find lots of these on ebay) and simply connect it to your pc.

BE CAREFUL. If you put too much pressure while removing that plastic connector, you could damage the pins and then things will go ... eh, complicated.
