October 18th, 2012, 10:36

Does your ReadSA script work on my hdd too or just on alpine?

Here are some outputs from the commands:

Re: Barracuda 7200.10 Selfscan

I see your drive is in quite good condition. very moderate number in G-list, health is deteriorated, but again not critical value 48 - 1001000 means bit 6 and 3 is set which means:
bit 6: (not disclosed) for internal use
bit 3: R/W notification
So not really errors. What SMART is telling you? Why do you want to recertify it? I think you should try N4, it is called selfscan-lite. It will certify user area, it will destroy all data, but you don't need backup and restore firmware.

But if you want to continue with N2, read on carefully, I don't have experience with this drive, all I can tell you - Galaxy - she is a bitch, you must be smart, as if you are not, you can turn Galaxy into a brick.

arztt wrote:To prepare selfscan, i need to save firmware first, because i have to send a cert file to the drive?
Does your ReadSA script work on my hdd too or just on alpine?

Yes, saving firmware is the one things and being able to restore it is other things. On this thread http://forum.hddguru.com/seagate-barracude-7200-8gb-st380011a-died-t23567.html you can find link to ST-Mem_free, I used to backup and restore firmware. The same mechanism is used to restore firmware. However:

Read carefully: Galaxy selfscan destroys APP code. This means that if you are lucky and immediately after selfscan reload APP code track using ST-Mem_free script, it is fine. But if if something goes wrong with selfscan or for some reason you cycle power on device, you will be not able to restore system tracks using the same utility.
Next time you power on device, you will end up on level F (called factory or FAIL). You must have plan to recover from such situation. I guess you need to find ST-Mem full version to upload code using SDLD protocol.

So unless you have backup plan, I don't think it is a good idea to continue with N2.

Yes very similiar scripts, just parameters will change, also for Alpine. Each drive has different Base track number and scripts have to be modified for each individual device

Thank you for your answer!

Why do you want to recertify it?
because it has the same problem as my 2 TB drive (which is now fully functional!). Too many bad sectors for the G-List, which I already cleared. The entries now come from a partial low level format, which i quitted after 10 minutes. If I do full llf, the G-List will be overfilled again and drive freezes.

I think you should try N4, it is called selfscan-lite.
Good one, I'll give it a try!

1. Reset SMART: 1>N1 (or N1,,22)
2. Cycle the power.
3. Reset health: T>H,,22
4. Start selfscan: N4,,22 (assuming it works on these drives)

Forgotten, If everything goes right, it will finish on test 99. Don't power off!
It would lose configuration still in buffers. Drive is just pausing and waiting for your input. Just thinking... maybe it is a time to fill platters with APP code (in case of N2)....
In any case, don't cycle power, press ^T tests will continue.

Ok ok, thank you.

Will try it this evening or tomorrow!

Just read that N10,,22 is more safe for Galaxy. If you didn't start N4 yet, try N10. If you did, don't interrupt.

Re: Barracuda 7200.10 Selfscan

I did N4 before you wrote the N10 command.

It found massive errors on the drive
Code:
.
.
.
**********Loading Theta and Sorting by Theta & Cylinder for Head 0**********

Loading Defect Groups among 1364 Defects on Head 0

1364 Defects pad & filled - Post Processing 24395 defects

Buzz HM SFI
!

*********Building Active Log from User Slip list for Head 1**********

**********Loading Theta and Sorting by Theta & Cylinder for Head 1**********

Loading Defect Groups among 2211 Defects on Head 1

Buzz HM SFI
.
.
.

On one test the drive just stucked for 8 hours and there were no messages in terminal, but I just let it do.
Finally after another 12 hours it finished.
Code:
.
.
.
Log 97 - Health 0000 - HlthDtl 0000 - Time = 00:08:41 Log Type = 01
Log 48 - Health 3000 - HlthDtl 0003 - Time = 01:22:40 Log Type = 01
Log 49 - Health 3000 - HlthDtl 0003 - Time = 01:17:43 Log Type = 01

Log 6F - Health 0000 - HlthDtl 0000 - Time = 00:00:13 Log Type = 01
Total Cert Time = 46:04:43
ASCII logging off

                          Power Cycling

End Test 4E

It needed 46 hours for the selfscan.
I set age back to 50 and now it's 100% repaired. No defects anymore and no delays. Thats incredible!
Ty again!

Re: Barracuda 7200.10 Selfscan

October 23rd, 2012, 8:01

Still I wouldn't trust this drive.
Code:
Log 48 - Health 3000 - HlthDtl 0003 - Time = 01:22:40 Log Type = 01
Log 49 - Health 3000 - HlthDtl 0003 - Time = 01:17:43 Log Type = 01

Health 3000 means 13 and 12 bits set
bit 13: - Serious R/W error
bit 12: - Error rate Health
It looks not good. I don't know what is HlthDtl and how to interpret bit values.
Besides selftest didn't complete, as you wrote you had to reset age. If everything goes right, it finishes on age 50.
You can repeat tests to get more confidence in the drive.
