big problem with a wd 2 tb disk

November 4th, 2012, 20:48

I have a big problem.

I have with a Western Digital disk WD20EARS 2TB mounted inside the computer for backup.

yesterday having to do a backup on the netbook, I removed and put on the docking station connected to the netbook. easy recovery (used for recovery a lost file on netbook) tells there are a bad blocks in WD20EARS disk .

the disk has not yet had never presented problems and continues to work well. for the safety I do a scan with hdd regenerator (which in the past has been very successful on other disks with bad sectors) I try to get him to do the repair and the first bad sector that is immediately regenerates. the second stops and does not go on for a long time. stop the process and I do a simple analysis (without regeneration) of the disc. does a scan for 1 full day and is more than 400 bad sectors.
how is it that a disc that has never had any problems with reading and writing has more than 400 bad sectors?
from windows I decided first to make a backup of importants things. here's the bad surprise .... the disk is now seen local disk and i can not longer access it. when I connect to pc (both with docking station and inside the sata) locks the computer resources and any diagnostic program is blocked. the disc has no sounds of broken heads or other but is as if idling ... the light of read / write flash continuously and you hear the sound of the disc that accompanies it.

I can not understand what caused the problem and if in any way I can access the contents with some software to copy the data.

I thank anyone who can be of help

If the hard disk is detecting correctly in the bios, then you must try to clone the whole drive to another same capacity or larger capacity drive.
dd-rescue or MTP can skip bad sectors and clone in reverse.
(Be careful about the source and destination parameters)
(Practice on some other drives to before you try on this drive)
Then you can run R-studio or similar recovery programs on the clone drive and get your data.
If the drive is not being properly reported in the bios, you may have to take DR help.
If the drive slows or makes noise or freezes while cloning , stop the cloning process, as the condition will become worse, you have to take DR help.

Here we go again. Never, ever, ever run a program like HDDRegen, SpinRite or any other tool that writes to the drive without getting a full backup of the drive in question. Better yet, get a full sector-by-sector copy.

As it stands right now, HDDRegen likely lost data from within the "bad sectors" that it remapped and you will never get that data back.

When you first looked at the drive, it was likely a $300 - $750 recovery, it is now likely a $500 - $1000 recovery and if you keep running HDDRegen, you might be able to get it up over $1000 or even make it unrecoverable by professional data recovery lab.

Fortunately, the drive is only a backup drive and you can just send it back for and RMA replacement. However, I sense that your statement, "I have a big problem," contradicts the following statement, "I have with a Western Digital disk WD20EARS 2TB mounted inside the computer for backup." If there is critical, non backed up data, on the drive, it might be a good time to get professional assistance while there is still hope.

thanks for your kind answers.
hdd regenerator have in fact made read-only to see how many bad sectors there were. has not attempted to repair them when they did a full scan.
data are important because they are inside the backup two computers, one of which now has the disk down to a problem with the heads. then I would have to back up the backup drive but when I did not have disks available.
therefore it is important even if a disk backup.

the disk connected to the computer just freezes windows, blocking any program that is doing while outside the box "try" to read the disk and appears in Windows Explorer "local unit" but inaccessible.

you think it is a logical disk damage or physical damage? is recognized by the bios and in dos I think I can make a copy of it. programs suggested acting out of windows? (each program becomes unusable when I connect the disk)

thanks

Hi Sathyan

that program is MTP?

What does it mean DR?

sorry for the questions but I'm not very experienced.

thanks

DR =Data Recovery
MTP= Media Tools Pro(Paid software used to clone drive , clones in reverse and skip bad sectors)

The more you scan the drive or run utilities on it , the more it is damaging for the drive, so i suggested to clone the drive to another drive and use the clone to run recovery tools. If you dont get the desired result you can send the original drive to DR company.

BUT If the drive slows or makes noise or freezes while cloning , stop the cloning process, as the condition of the drive will become worse(increasing the cost of recovery at DR).

If your data is very important , take the advice given by lcoughey,
