Smoked--> Died --> Now Alive

Hi hddgurus,
I have a WD Hard drive 2TB, Model WD20EARS-00S8B1.

Sometime back I plugged the drive into (cheap) adapter thingy to hook it up with USB (lesson learned :( ), I think I plugged the power cord wrong, though am not sure. Anyways, there was smoke coming from the PCB on the opposite side of the power connectors. Anyways, other than me almost having a heart attack, I just put the drive away.

After sometime, when I had got my PC and stuff, I hooked up the drive to my PC Power supply, lo behold, the drive starts to work... AND yes I backed up like there was no tomorrow :lol:

Its been few months now and there are no issues with the drive. I ran the WD Lifeguard (short test) and nothing came up.

My question to the experts is what happened here? Also should I rma the drive?

Thanks in advance.

Funny story, but admittedly not one we hear very often.

Count your lucky stars, and consider yourself technologically "hit by lightning".

:D

:mrgreen: :mrgreen: yeah I know, damn lucky. Just sat there near PC and backed up, didnt move a muscle :) Probably didnt breathe as well :)

Anyways, the Drive is working fine, just finished running FULL scan of WD utility and nothing, all fine. I off course know that this drive is gonna be toast anytime, and cannot be trusted, so probably will think about RMA.... though not sure how to claim it :)

Tell them the magic smoke escaped.. And that you want a disk that has all its smoke still inside.
