question about linux and data recovery

February 6th, 2013, 8:11

Hi to all

A friend has deleted file on WD my book world edition (white). Since this device is using linux as os question is how to try to find this file. File is excell document. Other than this deleted file wd works fine.

I can extract hdd from enclosure and connect it to pc put i have no idea which program to use to "undelete" file. In windows there are several program (paid and free) that can do this but for ext3 files system .... i have no idea.

THX

ext3 are journaled FS, which means undeleting is quite difficult.
However, try R-Studio, it supports ext3.

R-TT also has a product called R-Excel, it might come back with better results, better ask them or contact member Alt(R-TT) from this forum, perhaps will give you better advice as to what to use.

That wouldn't be an option, even if you knew which software to use, since this drive comes encrypted through the usb bridge. So if you remove from the enclosure, all you will end up with would be a bunch of encrypted data.

Problem is that this is network only device. I have no direct access to hdd. No usb on device. I will try R-TT software (downloading it now) but i fear that i will have to extract hdd in order to have full access.

@northwind thx for reply

R-Studio has the option to scan from network ('Connect to remote').

Otherwise, there is a way to do this, but needs a lot of patience and equipment.

Just to inform.

Since owner could not muster enough patience for software to finish I have given back drive without completing scan. Some people have no idea what patience is and that constantly asking is it done will not speed thing up.

Thanks to all that posted and gave me idea on what to do.
