smoke coming out of my wd my book essential after i plugged in the wrong power source..i bought another power but my MY BOOK doesnt work anymore...what shall i do?...can i repair it by myself? i want to recover the datas inside..pls help!!

Hello bobotneil, hmmm maybe if you are lucky could be just the VDR that got burnt, you can open the casing and take the PCB out and make a high resolution picture of the PCB ( circuits side ) and post it here. It will be easier for us to help if you do that.

DIY on drives with critical data is not advised
If you want to take DIY risk, you can do what Izualim suggested and post the pics to help you in fixing it.
You will need some electronic knowledge and also some basic tools for soldering and testing ..

If you've toasted the enclosure, you'll need a working one to de-encrypt the data (assuming your hard drive works or can be fixed DIY).

Let's hope you just toast a TVS or a fuse/diode in the enclosure, still if your data is important to you, seek a data recovery lab near your location, it shouldn't be so expensive at this stage.
